Tuition Per Year

"As a mom on a teacher's salary, WGU's low flat-rate tuition was crazy good—half the cost of other online universities." Hilary Tinnesand-Darnold,
Masters in Teaching, Mathematics,
College Place, Washington

of employers said that their WGU graduates were prepared for their jobs

Return on Investment

A WGU degree delivers superior results—it means you’ve demonstrated mastery of real-world competencies that employers are looking for. As a result, WGU grads frequently get jobs that more than pay for their education.

In a 2016 Harris Poll Online survey, 1,207 WGU graduates reported earning, on average, $19,100 more within 4 years of graduation—compared with an average of $6,700 reported by 1,403 new college graduates nationwide. With an average cost of $15,000 for a bachelor’s degree, the return on investment of a WGU degree is less than 2 years.

Reducing Student Debt by 40%

WGU’s Responsible Borrowing Initiative encourages students to borrow only what they need to complete their degrees. Since its launch in 2013, average borrowing per student (of those who take out loans) has decreased by $3,100 per year, a reduction of 40%. In two years, WGU reduced borrowing by $250 million.

Many WGU students receive scholarships and grants that make earning their degrees even more affordable.

During the past three years, WGU has awarded over $5 million in scholarships using the university's own funds as well as third-party contributions.

Questions and Answers

How does WGU keep its tuition so low?

As a nonprofit university, WGU North Carolina doesn’t need to benefit shareholders. Our students are our main concern. We also try to keep our operating costs low. And since we’re an exclusively online university, we don’t need to maintain expensive classroom buildings, a campus, and other non-academic programs.

Should I consider financial aid?

Using financial aid is a personal decision. When making this decision, you should know that a degree is a great investment in yourself that will pay for itself many times over. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree earn on average almost a million dollars more over the course their careers compared to those without one. A master’s degree typically has a similar impact on your wallet. You should definitely consider federal financial aid if it means the difference between getting your degree or not.
